In keeping with the warming temperatures, today we are introducing you to the sport of disc golf. It can only be practiced outdoors. Even if not everyone knows the sport, it can be practiced by anyone, young or old. Good results can be achieved with a little practice.
The rules
The aim of disc golf is to complete a course consisting of 18 holes (fewer are possible) with as few throws as possible. Each lane consists of a release point from which the disc is thrown and a metal catch basket in the direction of which the disc is thrown. A lane is finished when the disk lands in the basket. Depending on the level of difficulty, the courses can be between 40 and 250 meters long.
The equipment
You don’t need much to play disc golf. You can buy a basic set of washers for as little as €25-30 on the Internet. It is advisable to ensure that such a set consists of at least 3 targets of different weights for different distances. A catch basket is also required, which serves as a target in disc golf.
There are 3 disc golf courses in Berlin, some of which are open to the public: in Lichterfelde, Kreuzberg and Weißensee.
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Sports Association offers you the opportunity to rent basic equipment consisting of two catch baskets and various targets. Please contact us and we will organize the rental.
Worth knowing
Disc golf is suitable for everyone, whether young or old. Relaxed exercise in nature, social interaction, fairness, respect and mutual esteem make the sport a unique experience. If the sport is practiced more ambitiously, good eye-hand coordination, as well as strength and dynamics when throwing are important skills.
The sport was developed in the USA in the 1970s. The first disc golf groups also formed in Germany in 1979/80. Today, around 1,500 disc golfers in Germany play regularly. There are now over 3,000 courses worldwide and the number is increasing.
