Center for bike projects starts
Press Release Berlin, 02.06.2022, by Frank Nerlich Center for bicycle projects starts – bicycle container set up at the House of Sports The district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf has a new center for bicycle projects since Wednesday, June 1, 2022. A so-called “20 foot container” was set up next to the Haus des Sports at Eisenacher Straße 121 in Marzahn. Purchased with funds from the borough in Hamburg, it had to wait a few weeks to travel to Berlin because the necessary building permit took some time. The measure was initiated by the Berlin Society for Health through Sport gUG (BEGSpo) for its “Elementary School Project Two-Wheeler” and similar bicycle projects at the district office. Valuable support was provided by the Marzahn-Hellersdorf movement network. In the future, the container will be used to store bicycles and cargo bikes intended for mobility actions in the municipality. Mobility made easy by bike Katharina Tümmler from the district office (Fachamt OE QPK – Organizational Unit for Quality Development, Planning and Coordination of the Public Health Service) is very pleased with the set-up, as it means that mobility can be further advanced. Since 2018, the so-called mobility turnaround has been proclaimed in Berlin through the passing of the Mobility Act, which is unique in Germany. Marzahn-Hellersdorf is actively participating in this. “The container helps to implement bicycle projects at a low threshold for citizens” praises Tümmler. Bicycle rental, cargo bike and workshop service Günter Müller from BEGSpo emphasizes that the long struggle has finally come to a successful end after half a year. “Initially, the container will be used for an elementary school project to store bicycles,” he notes. The BEGSpo cooperates with various schools in Marzahn, with whom working groups are planned. The clubs located here can benefit from this. “A transporter will bring the bikes to the respective schools, which are supervised by BEGSpo. It is also planned to accommodate a loaner cargo bike” says Müller. There are also plans to rent out men’s and women’s bikes from here to the surrounding district centers. An advantage is the workshop for bicycles and motorcycles already located here, with which Müller would like to cooperate. Attractive sports location Jan Lehmann, chairman of the district sports association, welcomes the installation of the container. “I am very pleased to soon be able to use a container for bicycle projects on the premises of the District Sports Association. The project will be a good addition to the “Fleet Berlin” project, where cargo bikes can already be borrowed. Anything that increases the attractiveness of this sports location at the House of Sports, Education and Meetings can only be good,” emphasizes Lehmann.
